The meeting of the “Lithospheric Structure, Deformation and Breakup Processes" group and of the “Sedimentary Systems and Fluid Systems” group is getting closer and we would like to give you further information. The meeting will take place May 10th 2011, at the Alfred-Wegener-Institute, am alten Hafen, 26, Building D, Level 2a, Room 2390 in Bremerhaven, from 09:00 to 16:00.

The tentative scientific program is the following one:

09:00 – 12:30: Project reports, starting with 'basin evolution' followed by 'young processes' and first news from seismic experiments

  • H.-P. Bunge: News in SAMPLE
  • P. Kukla: Post-Breakup Margin Styles
  • J. Autin, M. Scheck-Wenderoth, H.J. Götze, C. Reichert , et al. : Colorado Basin 3D structure, relation to the Argentine passive margin
  • H. J. Götze et al: New results from Argentina
  • J. Gruetzner, G. Uenzelmann-Neben, and D. Franke: Sediment transport processes at the Argentine continental margin since the Oligocene: Results from the Project “Argentine Basin drifts I and II”
  • R. di Primio, Z. Anka, M. Lögering: Evolution of the Colorado Basin, Argentina
  • M. Karl: Thermal history, exhumation, uplift and longterm landscape evolution of the western South Atlantic passive continental margin, Brazil
  • S. Kollenz: Thermal history, exhumation, uplift and longterm landscape evolution of the South Atlantic passive continental margin in eastern Argentina
  • Ch. Haberland, T. Ryberg, M. Weber, J. Behrmann, W. Jokat: First results from the land seismic experiments in Northern Namibia
  • L. Planert, J. Behrmann, et al.: Seismic and magnetotelluric investigations offshore Namibia (MSM17/1): a seismic data compilation and very first results

13:30 – 16:00: Development of common scientific questions based on the morning reports and discussion, development of a strategy in order to better cross-link the projects and better coordinate the results

The “common scientific questions” could include:

  1. first order characteristics of conjugate margins (differences, common characteristics)
  2. characteristics of subsidence/uplift, magmatism, paleogeography
  3. source-sink relationships as a function of onshore denudation, basin evolution, offshore deposition, pick-up by oceanic currents
  4. implications for break-up mechanism or post break-up drivers of subsidence/uplift
  5. quantification of young processes (sediment drifts, oceanic currents, the escape features)

Participants are:

  1. Zahie Anka
  2. Jan Behrmann
  3. Hans-Peter Bunge
  4. di Primio Rolando
  5. Glasmacher Ulrich A.
  6. Hajo Götz
